AHFE Distinguished Scholars:


Starting 2024. we announce AHFE distinguished scholars. This award honors senior members who combine outstanding scholarly accomplishment with excellence in research and personify our image of the scholarly research and scientific program.

Criteria: The nominee should have been a current member of AHFE scientific advisory board or track chair for a minimum of five years and should hold the rank of Associate or full Professor. Nominees can be be tenured professors with a record of outstanding scholarly accomplishment combined with demonstrated excellence in teaching and inter-cultural and multidisciplinary scientific program development. Nominations can be also research faculty member or program manager at well-known institutions from around the world.

Dr. Jay Kalra

Royal University Hospital, University of Saskatchewan, Canada


Dr. Kalra is a Professor of Pathology in the University of Saskatchewan and has served as Head of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Kalra is a dedicated physician who has gained international acclaim for his role in laboratory medicine reorganization, and has contributed globally in the area of Quality care and Patient safety, including medical error and disclosure policies. He is recognized for his many contributions as a clinical scientist, academic leader and health system administrator. He has served as a national president of numerous medical associations and scientific societies. He has published extensively and is the author of the book “Medical Errors and Patient Safety: Strategies to reduce and disclose medical errors and improve patience safety.” He has been a champion in establishing a non-punitive “no-fault model” to address clinical/medical errors, and in developing educational programs and clinical guidelines reflecting evidence-based medicine. He is an advocate equity, diversity, inclusion at levels of healthcare.

Dr. Isabel L. Nunes

NOVA School of Sciences and Technology, Portugal


Dr. Nunes is Vice-Rector of NOVA University of Lisbon, responsible for the area of Quality Management, Accreditation, and Employability. Isabel L. Nunes is an associate professor with aggregation at the Faculty of Science and Technology of NOVA University of Lisbon, where she was a sub-director for the Quality area from 2015 to 2017. Isabel L. Nunes was the coordinator of the Master's program in Occupational Health and Safety (2013-2015) and a member of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Council (2010–2015). Currently, she is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Industrial Engineering Ph.D. Program (since Feb. 2009) and the Scientific Committee of the Integrated Master's in Industrial Engineering and Management (since Jul. 2014). She holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, specializing in Ergonomics and Human Factors (2003), and it is in this scientific area that she has been conducting research, with over 100 scientific publications in journals and conferences. Since 2015, she has been the chair of the International Conference on Human Factors and Systems Interaction, an affiliated conference of the International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics.

Dr. Vesa Salminen

Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology, Finland


Dr. Salminen is nominated as an Adjunct Professor at Energy Systems Faculty on the focus area “Digital Transformation in Business Co-Evolution in Sustainable Growth” for the period 1.1.2023-31.12.2027 and earlier he served as Professor (now Emeritus Prof.) at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology on Management and Leadership of Life Cycle Co-Innovation. Dr. Salminen is also nominated at this moment as Professor in Practice (Part-time) (2020---) and previously as Research Director at Häme University of Applied Sciences on the digital and sustainable transition of industry and society. He has also served two years’ time as senior research scientist on the topic area of Adaptive Complex Systems at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, Boston.  He is appointed as Managing Director at a consulting and training company Spiral Business Services Corp. that is providing expert services for networked life cycle businesses and co-innovation leadership. He has over 24 years of industrial experience in various positions in several enterprises and as RDI and Smart Systems expert in Finnish biggest industrial organization Technology Industries of Finland. He is expert on human-technology-relationship, innovation leadership, spiral innovation process, data analytics and data-to-service process, competence and capability management, digital transformation, industrial service and life cycle business, sustainable growth, circular economy and management of resilience in business transition. He is very accustomed on quadrable helix partnership creation and ecosystem-based approach in development activities. Dr. Salminen has published over 200 refereed journal articles, book chapters and conference articles by e.g. Springer Nature Publishing, Elsevier Publishing, Intech Media, IEEE Publishing, ASME Publishing, IST Publishing AHFE International Open Source and IGI Global Publishing.
